Washington Irving knew the road. He wrote it into being nearly two centuries ago, and somehow it's never quite closed. Some say it's still out there past Sleepy Hollow, past the old churchyard, where the Hessian rides at a gallop with no head atop his shoulders — carrying, instead, something far more memorable held high in one gloved hand.
